Magic Flute Tour…

Today was show #18 and day fourteen of the Magic Flute school tour I am currently performing. We have one more week of performances in Calgary, then March 19th -24th all remaining shows will be out of town. We have performed in some of the oldest and newest gymnasiums I’ve ever seen!! One interesting thing I keep seeing is the use of stages in older gyms. They seem to be used as storage areas, craft rooms, or boarded up — but never in use for what they were intended. Maybe they have another performance area or a newer stage, but somehow this bothers me. Perhaps I’m just a sap and love the ‘character’ that an older stage brings to a production. My dream is that all of these stages be spruced up and used for pageants, plays and musicals once again!! OR that’s what’s missing…schools just aren’t doing their own productions anymore! hummmmm…something needs to change.

Staging, rehearsals and on tour!

Monday Feb.13th marks the start of staging rehearsals for my next show — a school tour of THE MAGIC FLUTE. The eight of us Emerging Artists at Calgary Opera will be taking the show on the road touring Alberta schools Feb.27th to March 23, 2012. I can’t wait to see all of the children’s faces delight in the magic and wonder that only the music of Mozart can create! Check back for “Tour Updates” as I perform 2 shows a day in every gymnasium known to man. There are always interesting stories to be told…

‘Tis the Season…to learn music!

Hello music lovers! I have just completed my fall contract with Calgary Opera and I must say –it was a VERY busy term!! During these past few months I performed at various community events including Grave Gala, the ProArts Noon Concert Series and the Street of Dreams Gala. Another large part of my time was spent working with teachers and coaches who were either brought in specially to work with us, or were passing through on the mainstage. I feel SO lucky to have had coachings/lessons with some of Canada’s best, including: Kathy Gable, Peter Tiefenbach, Wendy Nielsen, Elizabeth Turnbull, John Fanning, Darryl Edwards, Taras Kulish and Gordon Gerrard. I also workshopped TWO brand new, and in the works, operas…but I am told they are top secret – so I can’t tell you any more about them…yet!
Currently I am spending most of my waking hours christmas shopping… just kidding…LEARNING MUSIC! I am learning 4 roles right now for this coming spring: 3rd Lady in our School Tour production of Magic Flute, Musetta in La Boheme (cover role), Ariodante in our EA production of Ariodante, and last but certainly not least…Rosina from Il Barbiere di Siviglia (role study).
I better get back to learning more music now, but first — Merry Christmas and a Happy 2012 to All!!

Italian Opera Cruise!

I have just returned home from a unforgettable 2 weeks in the Mediterranean performing on an Opera Cruise. I had never been to Italy before, therefore jumped at the offer to do a working holiday there!! I performed in 5 concerts consisting of opera arias and ensembles, with tenor Derek Johnson, baritone Andrew Love and soprano Jane Perrett. One of those nights was extra special as we did an outdoor Masked ball event! Singing under the stars, to the shinning moon and surrounded by people dressed in their Venetian masks is something I will never forget!
