
Mezzo-Soprano Jennifer Sproule is steadily garnering the attention of Canadian audiences with her expressive and colorful singing. She studied voice through the Royal Conservatory of Music and completed the Post Baccalaureate Opera Apprenticeship program at the University of Manitoba in 2006.
Recent opera engagements include Woodsman’s wife, Bootlegger’s wife and Owl in The Cunning Little Vixen at the Banff Arts Centre; Dorabella in excerpts from Cosi Fan Tutte with Banff’s Opera As Theater program, and Kate in Madama Butterfly with Manitoba Opera. On the concert stage, she has recently appeared with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and performed Robert Fleming’s Confession Stone at Winnipeg’s renowned Westminster United Church.
At Toronto’s Queen of Puddings Music Theatre program ‘Songs and Scenes’, she sang the role of Queen in The Midnight Court. Ms. Sproule spent the previous summer portraying Jo in Little Women in the University of Manitoba Contemporary Opera Lab. Other Winnipeg appearances include Mahler’s Kinder-Totenlieder conducted by Brendan McKeen, singing the role of Mrs. Nolan in The Little Opera Company’s The Medium, and a UMOA tour production of Hansel und Gretel, where she portrayed Hansel.
Ms. Sproule has won several awards including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition Regional Finalist award in 2009, the Doris (Mills) Lewis Memorial Trophy for most outstanding J.S. Bach Aria in the 2007 Winnipeg Music Festival, and she was runner-up in the 2007 Rose Bowl competition.
Upcoming 2010 engagements include appearing in concert for Duets and Arias with soprano Jennifer Carter, and singing the role of Lady Angela in Patience: Bunthorne’s Bride, with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Winnipeg.
